SET UP A LOW-MESS KIDS DECORATING STATION
The easiest way to keep this activity fun and avoid total sprinkle chaos is to set up a little decorating station before the kids begin.
A few simple tricks:
- Cover the table with baking paper or a wipe-clean mat
- Place sprinkles into small bowls or trays
- Give each child their own plate or tray
- Use aprons or old shirts
- Keep wipes or a damp cloth nearby for sticky fingers
- Work on one biscuit at a time
The best part about this activity is that kids can mostly do it themselves. The decorating doesn’t need to be perfect — messy, colourful and playful is exactly the vibe.
HOW TO MAKE THEM
STEP 1 — MAKE THE ICING
In a bowl, mix:
- 1 cup icing sugar
- Small amounts of water and/or lemon juice
Mix until smooth and thick enough to slowly spread across the biscuit without running off the edges. Separate into bowls and add food colouring. Bright blue and yellow create that fun nostalgic Aussie-style look.
STEP 2 — ICE THE BISCUITS
Using a spoon, spread white icing over each biscuit to create the little “bed sheet” look. You only need to cover the top half or top third of the Milk Coffee biscuit. Don’t worry if they look imperfect, the handmade look makes them feel even more playful and fun.
Next, place a Tiny Teddy right at the top of the white icing mixture so it looks like the teddy is tucked into bed. Allow this base layer to set for a few minutes before adding the coloured blanket icing otherwise the colours will mix.
STEP 3 — DECORATE
Now the fun part. Once the white icing base has slightly set, you can create the “blanket” look using a contrasting icing colour. Spread the coloured icing thickly across the lower section of the biscuit so it looks like a cosy blanket covering the Tiny Teddy and part of the white icing underneath. Don’t stress if the icing drips over the edges a little, that playful homemade look is part of the charm.
Then decorate the blanket with sprinkles, hearts, stars, silver balls or colourful lollies to make every teddy bed look unique and whimsical.
Add:
- Rainbow Sprinkles
- Silver Balls
- Hearts
- Stars
- Mini Chocolates
STEP 4 — LET THEM SET
Leave biscuits flat for around 20–30 minutes so the icing firms up slightly. Or let the kids “taste test” immediately if they can’t wait
KEEP THE PLAY GOING
Frequently Asked Questions about Making Your Iced Bickies
Can kids make these themselves?
Yes, this is a fantastic child-friendly baking activity. Younger kids may need a little help mixing the icing, but decorating the biscuits can absolutely be done independently. The imperfect, handmade look is all part of the fun.
How do I reduce the mess?
Use trays, baking paper, small sprinkle bowls and aprons to create a contained decorating station. Giving each child their own little workspace makes clean-up much easier and helps avoid sprinkle explosions across the kitchen.
What age is this best for?
Great for ages 3+ with supervision. Older kids especially love getting creative with different blanket colours, sprinkle patterns and decorating their own Tiny Teddy “beds.”
What biscuits work best?
Arnott's Milk Coffee biscuits work perfectly because their rectangular shape creates the ideal little “bed” for the Arnott's Tiny Teddy. Arnott's Scotch Finger-style biscuits also work really well for that nostalgic Aussie bicky look.
How does this connect to Make Me Iconic toys?
This activity was inspired by our nostalgic Australian wooden toy food range, designed to celebrate iconic Aussie treats through imaginative play, storytelling and creativity. Once the decorating is finished, kids can continue the fun with our Make Me Iconic Arnott’s Bickies Wooden Toys and Tea Set for café play, pretend baking and imaginative afternoon tea adventures.
